Purpose: This study investigated the effects of uncorrected astigmatism on dynamic stereoacuity.
Methods: 24 adults in their 20"s (mean age of 21.66¡¾1.99 years old) with myopic astigmatism with-the-rule were selected and Howard- Dolman Test was carried out with uncorrected C-1.00 D, uncorrected C-0.50 D, full vision correction (FVC), and spherical equivalent correction (SEC). Longitudinal offset that can cognize depth perception and dynamic stereoacuity were measured and compared at distance (3 m) and near (40 cm).
Results: In case of spherical equivalent correction and uncorrected astigmatism, longitudinal offset increased and dynamic stereoacuity decreased more than full vision correction in both distance and near. Especially, distance dynamic stereoacuity was significantly different (p<0.05). In addition to, the change of difference value of longitudinal offset and dynamic stereoacuity at distance was maximized between spherical equivalent correction and full vision correction (SEC ~ FVC) among all steps. And there was significantly larger change in the lower 0.50 D step (C?0.50 D ~ FVC) than the higher 0.50 step (C?1.0 D ~ C?0.50 D) (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Spherical equivalent correction and uncorrected astigmatism can affect depth perception which cause decrease in dynamic stereoacuity, so this should be taken into consideration when astigmatism is corrected.
